Health is wealth, so goes the old adage. Now, with more ailments than ever to contend with, and with healthcare costs and insurance premiums continually rising beyond the reach of the average citizen, more and more persons are beginning to see the wisdom in that old adage. It is not uncommon to see families spending up to $1000 on health insurance each month.

In just five years, that will add up to $60,000, which is a sizable investment. Worse still, that amount doesn’t guarantee that the family’s general sense of health and well-being will improve over the 5-year period.

Indeed much of what we call “healthcare” may better be described as “sickcare,” because for the most part, they’re merely emergency responses we get from physicians when a person is already down with one ailment or the other! And to make matters worse, the so-called healthcare system itself is gradually showing signs of systemic failure.

Should we also add that many health issues today are simply beyond the remedy of our once “trusted” physicians? To exonerate themselves, physicians now conveniently classify such health problems as “degenerative diseases”. How smart they are!

Truth is that back at medical school, doctors and their colleagues were not trained to stop you from falling ill. Their calling is to cure or heal you when you do fall ill. So if you’re going to stay healthy, it’s largely up to you! The habit of relying on your family doctor for good health is an idea that’s fast going out of fashion. More and more persons are now taking responsibility for their own health and well-being.

Indeed, your health is in your hands. By adopting a culture of health and wellness in your daily living, you’ll stay healthier and need medical attention far less often. It starts with what you do on a daily basis. Besides constantly watching what goes into your mouth and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle, you must commit yourself to a health plan.

You may design it into a 6-months, 1-year, or even 5-year personal health plan. Depending on specific areas of your health you’re most motivated to address, your health plan may include hiring a wellness coach. This will cost some money, but the health benefits are well worth whatever it costs you. Wellness coaches are good at helping to cultivate the right attitudes and behaviors that produce the greatest results.

They will also help you develop the type of action plan that will be easier to stick to. Wellness coaching programs are also available online. But it is important that you commit yourself to whichever is recommended for the goal you desire to achieve.

The beauty of cultivating a culture of health and wellness in your lifestyle is that it serves as preemptive measures towards illnesses. It also leaves you with the liberating feeling that you’re in charge of your health and your life. And if you practice it daily, it soon becomes a part of the fabric of your life-more like your culture. And what better habits to form than those that enable us to live healthier, happier lives!

As more and more health problems continue to ravage our world, there’s wisdom in taking your health and well-being into your own hands rather than relying on what government and physicians can offer. You can achieve good health by adopting enlightened self-care health and wellness practices. Cultivating a culture of health and wellness may prove to be the best habit you ever formed!

Can Employer-Provided Tennessee Health Insurance Be Replaced?

The non-profit Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released the results of its study of employer-provided Tennessee health insurance coverage. During the past decade, an estimated 354,000 Tennesseans or about eight percent) lost employer-based Tennessee health insurance coverage. The number of employees who are losing the option for Tennessee health insurance as an employee benefit or who have to give up coverage as the cost escalates is increasing. According to a similar study by the University of Minnesota, even employees who retained coverage through their employer were spending much more for TN health coverage plans.

The situation in Tennessee is indicative of the national trend as U.S. of employers have been dropping health coverage for workers for many years. The majority of those losing group Tennessee health coverage plans made around $22,050 for a family of four. That means they fell below the poverty guidelines. For almost 60 years, employment had been a standard way for families to get health insurance coverage. With this option fading away, Tennessee’s uninsured rate increased from 9.9 percent in 1999 to 17.1 percent by 2009.

Even those employees who continue to get health insurance on the job face higher out-of-pocket costs than ever. According to Philip Johnson, a partner at the Memphis-based Argyle Benefits Consultants, companies are increasing employee health care contributions even while salaries are staying the same of decreasing. That means out-of-pocket charges are taking a bigger share of workers’ incomes and absorbing more of the family budget each year.

The Affordable Care Act will require employers with 50 or more employees to offer health coverage or pay a penalty per employee in 2014. At that time, employees will also be able to buy TN health coverage plans through the Tennessee health coverage exchange. This is expected to bring down the average cost of insurance by increasing the competition between insurers.

Can Group Tennessee Health Insurance Be Replaced?

Until 2014, both small businesses and individuals are turning to polices with high deductibles to keep the cost of premiums down. The amount of the deductible and the type of managed care (like HMO or PPO) can make a huge difference in monthly premiums.

Now that regular preventive care services are exempt from both co-payments and deductibles, plans with high deductibles are less likely to discourage people from getting an annual check-up, screenings for major diseases like cancer and high blood pressure or flu shots.

Some of the high-deductible Tennessee health coverage plans go a step further. Health Savings Account (HSA) Plans allow you to start a special type of savings account. These Health Savings Accounts can be used to invest in simple interest-bearing accounts, bonds, mutual funds or stocks. Regardless of the type of investment, HSA money grows with tax-free earnings and the balance rolls over from year to year.

HSA funds can be used to cover your health care or that of your family. Alternatively, HSA money can be left invested until retirement to double as a retirement account. Health Savings Accounts may be the best alternative to keep premiums low until the Tennessee health insurance exchange is available. With the growing popularity of these plans, Health Savings Accounts may even be competitive with coverage available through the state exchange.

Get Texas Health Insurance Even If You Have Diabetes

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that at the end of 2007, approximately 1,279,600 Texans were known to have diabetes and the number of diabetics has continued to increase. With a greater need for health care, people with diabetes typically have to pay more for health insurance for Texas, but some insurance companies have more lenient medical underwriting standards than others. Medical underwriting estimates how much health care is likely to cost when you apply for health insurance. Premiums are based on those estimates.

One way to cut the cost of health care is to manage diabetes with diet and exercise. That can reduce your out-of-pocket costs for health care not covered with insurance. Even diabetes has now been reversed with dietary changes. In this case, reversed means that the person who had diabetes in the past could see a doctor now and the doctor would not know diabetes had ever been a problem. That not only means a big reduction in out-of-pockets health care costs, but may also help to lower premiums since no services related to diabetes are needed.

The Texas Diabetes Council has plans to help Texans prevent and control diabetes this year. They are endorsing a comprehensive approach that includes information dissemination, seminars, promotion of lifestyle changes, and other health policy interventions to reduce the economic and health burden of diabetes in Texas. Managing diabetes could also help more uninsured people get TX health insurance coverage.

What Texas Health Insurance Options Are Available If You Have Diabetes?

By 2014, when the Affordable Care Act goes into full effect, people with diabetes and other pre-existing health conditions are guaranteed access to TX health plans. In the meantime, there is a Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan or PCIP. That allows you to choose from three plan options with different levels of premiums, deductibles and co-pays. The PCIP is specifically designed for people with pre-existing health problems and attempts to provide less expensive coverage than other existing plan options.

The PCIP plan also provides 100% coverage with no deductible for preventive care when you see in-network health care providers. Preventive services include physical exams, vaccinations, and other preventive care services that are recommended to maintain health. On the downside, only those who have been uninsured for at least 6 months can apply. The PCIP also requires a doctor’s statement certifying you have or have had a health problem.

How Do New Texas Health Insurance Plans Help Maintain Health?

With Texas health insurance obtained after the Affordable Care Act became law, the old out-of-pocket costs attributed to co-payments and having to meet a deductible no longer apply to recommended preventive services. That makes it easier to catch diseases, like diabetes, early when they’re most treatable. Many people successfully manage diabetes with regular exercise, weight management and eating to keep blood sugar levels stable.

It may sound like a lot of work, but some physicians have made it much easier. Dr. Neal Barnard, for one, has developed a diet that has been shown to be three times more effective at managing diabetes that and the standard diet previously recommended to people with diabetes. Surprisingly, the new diet does include bread. Because wheat and white bread raise blood sugar levels more than pumpernickel and rye, it’s easy to substitute the latter two. There’s even a sugar now on the market that’s low glycemic index – agave nectar.

The glycemic index, sometimes just called the GI, is the key to ranking carbohydrates based on how they affect blood glucose levels. Low GI carbs produce only small fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels. Keeping levels stable can be the secret reducing the risk of diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
